i feel a little bit lost professionally. i dont know if this is just a phase, but i just feel like there are no jobs out there and i just dont know the right people. the fact that i get like 10 emails EVERYDAY from girls on myspace wanting me to advise them in their careers, recommend make-up schools and explain my situation, does not help. i mean seriously, i work at BANANA REPUBLIC and if i didnt have jeffry i would STARVE. i am sure that the girls mean no harm and they are just honest questions, but i mean, come on. if you wake up in the morning and your are consumed with the idea of creating and doing make-up- then you are a make-up artist and chances are if you are that focused and consumed you probably don't need advice because you are out there working hard and making a way for yourself. i dont know, maybe i am just being a negative nelly.
i just want to get some good quality prints for my portfolio, but it seems like most of the photographers i have worked with are now full fledged contestants in the asshole olympics and either lag, or suck all together.

On the photographer side of things, I actually have never had someone not give me prints or a CD so I can't relate but all I can suggest is that you ask people up front when they will give them, have them put it in writing (even email) because a model I worked with had this problem and when she showed the photographer the email that said she would give all the images to her, she felt like an asshole and handed them over.
Don't give up girl. You are in a slump. I go through them almost weekly. I can recommend some good photographers to you if you like?

But totally, i get so many emails everyday. i actually saw your clause and put something similar on mine, not to be a dick or anything, but it just gets exasperating answering the same damn questions all the time.
as far as the photographers go, its more a matter of them lagging than anything else. with the exception of that shaun alexander guy who refused to give me prints.
i dont know what it is but photographers get this "god complex" going on and seem to forget entirely that other people make the shoot happen.
i guess the slumps are just part of the business. why couldn't we have fallen in love with a more consistent career ;)
when are you moving to nyc?

I was thinking Sept, early Oct but one of my clients wants me to do her wedding in Mexico in Oct so I am going to stay longer.
What is Shaun's reason for not giving you prints??
January 30 2006, 04:29:22 UTC 6 years ago
he just takes advantage of atrists. like he kept telling me, oh yeah there are some great shots, i will send them to you. and then like a month and a half later, i was like... sooo... when are you going to get me the prints and he started talking about how much he helped my career and how i was ungrateful and all this shit, it was ridiculous. not to mention, all the pictures were so overly processed that they wouldnt have helped me that much.
so basically, if you know anybody who is going to pay to work with him, pass along the warning.
new york is going to be an intense move, but its where the fashion is.

I'm not down there or know, but this is what I've had people recommend to me.....
Everyone tells me that LA is oversaturated with makeup artists, and a lot of it is who you know (which really sucks because there are a lot of talented people out there not getting the jobs they deserve). So......my plan was to go down there and get my schooling and then go somewhere else to try and get a job. I've been doing research and Vancouver, Canada has a lot of opportunities for people (they film things there all the time) as well as Las Vegas. I figured, at least for me, I would end up in Los Angeles after a while..........but probably not start out there.
Another thing someone recommended to me was an agent. I don't know if you have one or not, or how difficult it is to get one.
I know a lot of people work for a place like MAC in the beginning, freelancing or working the counter, or so I've been told. I've known people who've gotten connections working there, amazingly.
